Water engineering unit converter

Convert between the units used in UK water and wastewater engineering: flow in L/s, m³/h, ML/d and MGD, pressure and head in bar, kPa, metres of water and psi, concentration and load in mg/L, kg/d and meq/L, surface loading in m/h and gpm/ft², area, volume, power, specific energy and temperature. Pick a category and the converter shows your value in every unit of that category at once. Below the converter are complete one-unit tables for each category and an ion table with equivalent weights, so the page is a reference as well as a tool.

  • UK and US gallons differ by 20%: 1 MGD (UK) is 4,546 m³/d and 1 MGD (US) is 3,785 m³/d. Say which you mean.
  • 1 ML/d = 11.57 L/s = 41.67 m³/h. A works of 10 ML/d DWF serves roughly 50,000 to 70,000 people.

How the conversion works

  1. Linear units. Each unit has a factor f to the category's base unit (L/s, kPa, mg/L, m/h, m², m³, kW, kWh/m³). Valueto = valuefrom × ffrom ÷ fto [NIST].
  2. Definitions used. 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N, 1 US gal = 231 in³ = 3.785411784 L, 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L, 1 atm = 101 325 Pa, 1 mm Hg = 101 325 ÷ 760 Pa, 1 m H₂O (conventional) = 9 806.65 Pa, 1 hp = 745.6999 W, 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ, 1 acre = 4 046.8564224 m² [NIST] [BIPM].
  3. Temperature. °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9; K = °C + 273.15 [BIPM].
  4. Load. kg/d = mg/L × m³/d ÷ 1000, since 1 mg/L = 1 g/m³. Flow is first converted to m³/d (L/s × 86.4).
  5. Ions. meq/L = mg/L ÷ (molar mass ÷ charge); mmol/L = mg/L ÷ molar mass; mg/L as CaCO₃ = meq/L × 50.043, the equivalent weight of CaCO₃ (100.087 ÷ 2) [IUPAC].

Worked example with the default inputs

1 L/s to L/min: fL/s = 1 and fL/min = 1 ÷ 60, so 1 × 1 ÷ (1 ÷ 60) = 60 L/min. The same litre a second is 3.6 m³/h, 86.4 m³/d, 0.0864 ML/d, 0.019 MGD (UK), 15.85 US gpm and 0.0353 ft³/s. For the load helper, 250 mg/L at 1,000 m³/d is 250 × 1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 250 kg/d. For calcium at 100 mg/L the equivalent weight is 40.078 ÷ 2 = 20.04 g/eq, so 100 ÷ 20.04 = 4.99 meq/L and 4.99 × 50.043 = 250 mg/L as CaCO₃.

What this cannot tell you. The converter is exact for defined units but not for quantities that depend on fluid properties. ppm by mass equals mg/L only at a density of 1 kg/L; metres of water assume 1000 kg/m³; gas flows need a stated temperature and pressure (Nm³/h, Sm³/h) and are not covered here; and "as N", "as P" or "as CaCO₃" expressions require the species to be identified before converting. Significant figures are kept to four for display, which is more than most field measurements justify.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres per second is 1 ML/d?

1 megalitre a day is 1,000 m³/d, which is 1,000,000 L ÷ 86,400 s = 11.574 L/s, or 41.67 m³/h. Conversely 1 L/s is 86.4 m³/d or 0.0864 ML/d.

What is the difference between UK and US MGD?

A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L and a US gallon is 3.785411784 L, so 1 MGD (UK) = 4,546 m³/d = 52.6 L/s and 1 MGD (US) = 3,785 m³/d = 43.8 L/s. The 20% gap is large enough to size a pump wrong, so UK practice has moved to ML/d and L/s.

How do I convert mg/L to kg/d?

Multiply the concentration by the daily flow in m³/d and divide by 1,000, because 1 mg/L = 1 g/m³. For example 250 mg/L BOD at 1,000 m³/d is 250 × 1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 250 kg/d. For a flow in L/s, multiply by 86.4 first to get m³/d.

What is mg/L as CaCO3 and how does it relate to meq/L?

Hardness and alkalinity are often expressed as if the ions were calcium carbonate, which has an equivalent weight of 50.04 g/eq. Convert the ion to milliequivalents (mg/L ÷ equivalent weight, where equivalent weight = molar mass ÷ charge) and multiply by 50.04. For calcium: 100 mg/L ÷ 20.04 = 4.99 meq/L = 250 mg/L as CaCO3.
